Graduate Advisor for Community Engagement & Mavs in Action - Student Activities

RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Work with Assistant Director, Student Workers, and members of Mavs in Action in furthering the Community Engagement Office mission while adhering to the University’s mission, vision, and core values. Areas of responsibility include undergraduate program planning and advising, risk management, leadership training, group dynamics, and promotion/marketing. Assist Mavs in Action during regular meetings/leadership development as well as large campus-based events such as Free Farmers Markets, involvement fairs, and MLK Day of Service. Some events may be more than 6+ hours a day. This role also plans and executes/attends a 5-day service-learning trip during yearly scheduled University Spring Break, attended by 12-20 MNSU undergraduate and graduate level students.

  • Meet weekly with Assistant Director, Leadership Team members (Mavs in Action, ASB, etc.) and specific group volunteers.
  • Provide direction or assistance to student staff and volunteers to ensure efficiency and continuity in program development areas.
  • Implement and supervise activities as assigned.
  • Plan and implement an Alternative Spring Break travel opportunity.
  • Post-project, meet with the Office of Community Engagement Team to evaluate performance, give inter-department feedback, and document discussions.
  • Develop and redesign project/programs according to post-project analysis.  Document changes for future use by the office.
  • Through exit surveys, interviews, and personal participation, analyze indicators like attendance, participation, and impact of Community Engagement Office programming and activities.
  • Maintain documentation regarding surveys, feedback, and other sources to act as references for future programming and projects.
  • Develop assessment tools to evaluate participant experience.
  • Perform tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director of the Community Engagement Office or Student Activities staff.
  • Act as a knowledge source for individuals inquiring about the Community Engagement Office.
  • Develop the undergraduate, Community Engagement staff schedule.
  • Professional Development: Graduate Advisors in Student Activities gain valuable leadership, advising, and event management experience, and are encouraged to participate in workshops, trainings, and campuswide initiatives that prepare them for careers in higher education or their chosen field. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Current Driver’s License and meet the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (MnSCU) Vehicle Fleet Safety vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
  • Prior program planning experience, development & implementation experience.
  • Ability to work late evenings and occasional weekends on an irregular basis.  
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date. 
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing.

  • Ability to manage crisis situations.
  • Experience with collegiate programming boards and/or enrolled in the College Student Affairs, Sport Management, Educational Leadership, Industrial Organized Psychology, Public Administration, graduate program, or a closely related program.
  • Contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funds, there is a possibility that this appointment may be continued beyond the initial period of employment. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment. 

SALARY/STIPEND: Full-time assistantship (20 hours per week) with a $5,000 stipend during each semester of appointment, out-of-state tuition waiver, and a waiver of tuition charges for up to nine (9) graduate credits per semester. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for tuition waiver.
