Graduate Assistant-Asian American Affairs - Multicultural Center

RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION: 
• Assist Director of Asian American & Multicultural Affairs with any duties assigned.
• Coordinate with staff to design, monitor, participate, and develop new avenues to connect with Asian American and diverse students.
• Serve as a liaison providing leadership development, event support, and general mentoring. 
• Create, delegate, execute and supervise annual events as well as workshops. 
• Guide and assist student leaders with event and program planning and management on social justice initiatives, community building, leadership development and education initiatives.
• Coordinate with departments in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion to create a united community. 
• Serve as a resource for Asian American and diverse students.
• Support recruitment and retention efforts including high school visits, university events and community events.
• Attend department meetings and trainings.
• Attend and support fellow Diversity, Equity & Inclusion departments’ programs and annual events.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Demonstrated commitment to student development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Ability to speak in public and the classroom environment.
  • Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours within 20 hour per week schedule.
  • Possess an understanding of historical and social issues that impact diverse communities and specifically Asian American communities.
  • A Bachelor's Degree
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date. 
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Preference to students in the Counseling & Student Personnel graduate program.
  • Experience planning educational and social programs.
  • Knowledge of multiculturalism, feminism, LGBT+ community and other marginalized populations.
  • Advising, counseling, and leadership experience.
  • Experience working with student organizations.
  • Ability to read, write, speak in English and at least one Asian language (especially Hmong, Vietnamese, Laotian, Khmer, or Karen).
  • Ability to manage various social media platforms. (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.)
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment. 

SALARY/STIPEND: Up to $10,000.00 stipend plus tuition stipends (up to 9 credits/semester), dependent upon availability of funds, period of appointment and assignment. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for tuition waiver.
