RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION: 

This graduate assistantship will work as a member of the advising team in the College of Business, College of Allied Health, School of Nursing, or College of Science, Engineering, and Technology. Graduate Assistant academic advisors are involved in a range of activities geared toward recruitment, student success, and retention. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

• Deliver academic advising services to a diverse student population through individual and group advising sessions. 

• Assist with orientation and registration processes. 

• Review academic records to assess progression toward admission to major and degree completion. 

• Provide support services and appropriate referrals to students in transition and/or those experiencing academic or personal difficulties. 

• Develop and participate in programs geared toward student success. 

• Maintain accurate records. 

• Learn, understand, and explain academic policies to individuals and groups of students. 

• Participate in admissions recruitment events. 

• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Bachelor's Degree conferred by start date.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, professionalism, dependability, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information to groups of students.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a member of the University Advising Team.
  • Basic technology skills and ability to learn new software applications.
  • Flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience in student services and/or program planning and management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.

SALARY/STIPEND: Up to $10,000 for the academic year (up to 20 hours per week) plus tuition stipend of up to 9 credits per semester. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for a tuition waiver.
