Graduate Assistant - Violence Awareness & Response Program

RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DESCRIPTION: 

  • Create, organize, and implement programs to reduce the pervasiveness and effects of sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking. 
  • Deliver presentations to the campus community, as requested by faculty, student organizations, and academic/professional departments. \
  • Serve, alongside the Director of VARP, as a stakeholder on the Campus Community Response Team (CCRT) and similar committees. 
  • Provide referrals to support services for victims/survivors. 
  • Provide confidential advocacy to students, under the supervision of the VARP Director. 
  • Participate in the coordination and management of our Recognized Student Organization: Peer Educators Acting for Change and Equality (PEACE). 
  • Assist with the creation and evaluation of program surveys/assessments. 
  • Develop social media content and brand. Maintain a knowledgeable, professional, enthusiastic, and personable attitude while leading in all aspects of our work. 
     

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • An understanding of the complexity of work related to gender-based violence.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Willingness to work and learn in a collaborative environment.
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Admitted to a Minnesota State University, Mankato graduate program by start date.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of six (6) graduate credits per semester during assistantship, and in good academic standing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Advocacy, anti-violence programming, and student leadership experience.
  • Willingness to facilitate classroom presentations and other public speaking engagements.
  • Preference given to students who have completed 40-hour sexual assault training in the state of Minnesota.
  • Experience planning educational or social programs.
  • Group facilitation skills.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working with anti-violence advocacy, gender-based violence response, and/or prevention programming.
  • Knowledge of anti-violence work, rape culture, advocacy, bystander intervention, trauma-informed care, and men's involvement in anti-violence work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advising, counseling, and leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.

SALARY/STIPEND: Up to $10,000 plus tuition stipends, dependent upon availability of funds, period of appointment, and assignment. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for a tuition waiver. 

RELATED INFORMATION: 

Complete readings related to advocacy, gender-based violence, peer education and other topics as assigned. Create a safe and welcoming environment for students. Due to potentially sensitive information, the Graduate Assistant is required to maintain strict confidentiality. Participate in weekly staff meetings and weekly supervision with the VARP Director. Help further the goals, mission, and objectives of the Violence Awareness and Response Program.

Minnesota State System policy requires that graduate assistants must reside within the State of Minnesota for the duration of their appointment.
